Youngsville Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Cambridge Springs, Maplewood

May 5, 2022

YOUNGSVILLE, Pa. – It was a busy day for the Youngsville Eagles, as they split a doubleheader, falling to Cambridge Springs, 12-2, followed by an 8-3 win over Maplewood.

Nate Lucks had a big game on the mound at the plate in the win over Maplewood

Youngsville scored four runs in the first inning, with Lucks going 4-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, three RBIs, and two runs.

Lucks also went six innings on the mound, allowing three runs (two earned), scattering six hits, and striking out seven.

The Eagles had 13 hits, as Matt DeSimone also went 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs, while Keegan Mesel was 2-for-4 with a run and Wyatt Dalrymple was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

“Lucks threw well in the second game,” said Youngsville coach Eddie Dorunda. “We still struggled early on in the Maplewood game helping our pitcher out and making plays but in the fifth inning on the guys focused up and got the job done. It was a long day with two games but I am proud of how we responded after the first game.”

Dorunda was proud of the effort of his whole team, including the bench guys for their positive energy and focus.

In the game against Cambridge Springs, DeSimone had a two-run triple to cut a 4-0 deficit to 4-2, but the Eagles were unable to overcome 13 walks.

They did load the bases with no outs in the sixth, trailing 5-2, but Brady Jardina came on in relief for Cambridge Springs and was able to get out of the jam.

Tristin Mazzadra got the win for Cambridge Springs, going five-plus innings and allowing two runs on six hits, striking out three and walking five.

James Johnson got the start for Youngsville, allowing four runs (two earned) in 5 ⅓ innings on two hits and six walks, striking out seven.

“We walked 13 guys and didn’t make the plays and that’s how you lose a game that is within reach,” Dorunda said. “We also left a lot of guys on base the first game. Had the bases loaded with no outs and weren’t able to push one across. Our hitters need to be more aggressive with two strikes like we were the second game. You can’t let the umpire ring you up in those big scoring situations.”

The Eagles return to action on Friday, hosting Saegertown.

SAEGERTOWN 13, EISENHOWER 0, 5 innings

SAEGERTOWN, Pa. – Landon Caldwell doubled and drove in a pair of runs and also tossed three shutout inning as Saegertown beat Eisenhower 13-0 in five innings.

Six other Panthers had an RBI in the win. Dylan Flinchbaugh and Henry Shaffer had two hits each, while Shaffer scored three runs.

Shawn Pascuzzi took the loss, allowing seven runs in two innings.

Cameron Jakubczak had a single for Eisenhower.
