Sugar Grove Man Killed in Accident Near Greensburg Friday

MADISON, Pa. – Pennsylvania State Police reported that a Sugar Grove man was killed as a result of a single-vehicle accident in Hempfield Township near Madison Borough Friday night.

According to a release from PSP-Greensburg, John D. Kelly, 73, of Sugar Grove was killed when his vehicle went off the road, through several residential yards, and struck a tree shortly after 8 p.m. Friday.

Police said Kelly was driving a 2007 SAAB 9-7x eastbound on Middletown Road in Hempfield Township. Kelly’s vehicle left the roadway after negotiating a left, downhill curve and proceeded southeast through the yard of 330 Middletown Road, police said. The vehicle continued across Rim Rock Lane and through the yard and over the gravel driveway of 340 Middletown Road, police said, before striking a tree on the east side of the property.

According to police, the vehicle spun 90 degrees counterclockwise upon striking the gravel driveway and struck the tree with the 3 o’clock side of the vehicle. Police said Kelly was not wearing a seatbelt and was deceased upon arrival.

Madison is approximately 10 miles southwest of Greensburg and 30 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.
