NY Man Killed in Canoeing Incident on Conewango Creek

JAMESTOWN, NY – A Pine Plains, New York man was killed after his canoe rolled during an outing on the Conewango Creek on Sunday, May 22, according to New York State Police.

SP-Jamestown troopers responded to a call at the Conewango Creek at 7 p.m. Sunday that a canoe overturned and one occupant was unaccounted for. Troopers learned that multiple people were canoeing on the creek and a canoe operated by Michael T. Leary, 46 of Pine Plains, NY, was unaccounted for.

The NYSP Underwater Recovery Unit and Chautauqua County Water Emergency Team, along with local fire agencies conducted a search and discovered Leary’s body on Monday, May 23. Police said Leary was not wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident. Leary was transported to the Erie County Medical Examiner’s Office.

NSYP said the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
