WARREN, Pa. – The Warren boys tennis team improved to 2-0 with a 5-0 victory over visiting Hickory at Betts park today.

The Dragons were dominant in singles play, as they lost only five sets in three matches.

Logan Fincher was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Tony Giuseppucci at first singles. In second singles, Wesley Kiehl topped Kevin Walton, 6-0, 6-0, and Luke Smelko won 6-0, 6-3 against Julian Hudson at third singles.

“The boys all came out with solid game plans, athletic play, and killer instincts,” said coach Travis Myler.

At first doubles, Max Harrison and Ian Darling were 7-5, 6-2 winners over Arick Somoras and Logan Phillips. In second doubles, Will Strassburg and Mark Lynds battled to a 7-6(3), 6-3 win against Chris Trontel and Ryan Drendi.

“We were proud of the boys’ grit and determination today as both doubles pairs had to comeback in their opening sets against tough region opponents,” Coach Thomas Pellegrino said. “This match provided us a good assessment of where we are as a team. It allowed us to see the strengths and weaknesses of each player and will give us an opportunity to become even better for the future. Hickory has historically been one of the top teams in the region and for us to go out and play as we did makes a good statement for the region.”

Warren travels to McDowell on Tuesday to scrimmage the top AAA team in the district.

“With Cathedral Prep dropping down to AA, scrimmaging a tough McDowell team makes a lot of sense” Coach Myler noted.  “Our boys need to prepare for a season of tough opponents and the ups and downs of a season of boys tennis”

In Junior Varsity play, the Dragons dominated as well winning 3 of the 5 contests.  Abe Wolf, Derek Hahn, Seth Conarro, Owen Strandburg, Jared Peterson, Seth Lester, and Camden Drayer were all winners in their contests.

“All of our players competed and improved on court today,” Coach Myler said.  “The team is showing consistent improvement and is looking for as much tennis as we can get.”
