Painting for Fun(ds)

March 30, 2022

CLARENDON, Pa. – The Blue Star Mothers of Kinzua PA 203 kicked off a busy week, and month, with Paint Night at the Clarendon VFW Tuesday.

While attendees got the opportunity to get painting tips and pointers from Deb Casias of “Painting with Deb,” and most of the proceeds from the event went to Blue Star Mothers. Tuesday was the second time Blue Star Mothers held a paint night. Painting for fun, and for funds, as it were.

“In the last five years painting has become quite the thing in the area,” Blue Star Mothers’ Kim Alberts said. “We do different things to raise money. And this was just something different. We decided to try it.”

The bulk of the money raised will be used for the Veteran’s Dinner the group has planned for April 30.

“We’re raising money for the Veteran Dinner,” Alberts said. “And so (Casias) is being very generous tonight and getting a lot of her proceeds back to the organization.”

The local chapter of Blue Star Mothers began three years ago and has been busy making its impact felt, despite spending most of its existence in a pandemic. Blue Star Mothers has sent Christmas care packages to troops overseas, “flagged” yards of local veterans, held a vigil for the service members who were killed in Afghanistan, and had the chance to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

In order to do those things, the group will hold periodic events locally to raise money and/or accept donations of goods.

“Warren County is so generous and so good,” Alberts said. “We have trucks for troops. We’ve done chicken barbecues, we’ve done 5K’s even just raffles.”

The next event will be a “Donation Breakfast” on Saturday, April 2 from 8 – 10 a.m. at Praise Fellowship in Russell.

“Just come on down and give us a donation and we have a lot of good food,” Alberts said.
