DEP Officially Certifies Closure of Grunderville Landfill

July 27, 2022

WARREN, Pa. – After a more than five-year-long process, the Grunderville landfill closure is official.

Commissioner Ben Kafferlin said during Wednesday’s meeting that the county received a letter from the Department of Environmental Protection that certified the closure of the landfill, located in Pleasant Township.

“I want to thank Dan Glotz (County Planner) for being an unbelievable resource in supporting this initiative,” said Commissioner Jeff Eggleston. “The landfill is closed and the Solid Waste Authority is dissolved, which is great news.”

At Monday’s work session, Eggleston said that “something has to change” in regards to the county recycling program.

With the closure of the Grunderville landfill, that process can now move forward.

“The discussion that we’ve had is to shut down the program county-wide for six to 12 months and plan for a relaunch,” Eggleston noted.

Elk, Eldred, Cherry Grove and Columbus townships still participate in the county’s current program.

More information on the county’s potential plans for recycling can be found here.
