Corry Man Charged with Homicide in Death of Amish Woman in Sparta Township

SPARTA TOWNSHIP, Pa. – A Corry man has been arrested and is facing multiple charges, including criminal homicide, in relation to the death of an Amish woman in Sparta Township on Feb. 26.

Corry-based Pennsylvania State Police announced that Shawn C. Cranston, 52 of Corry, has been charged with Criminal Homicide, Criminal Homicide of an Unborn Child, Burglary, and Criminal Trespass in the killing of 23-year-old Rebekah A. Byler. Byler was pregnant at the time of her death.

According to online court records, Cranston had a preliminary arraignment before Magisterial District Judge Amy Nichols early Saturday morning and was remanded to the Crawford County Jail without bail. There is no possibility of bail in cases involving a charge of criminal homicide.

Troopers were notified of a deceased female at a residence on Fish Flats Road just before 12:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 26, 2024, according to a release from PSP-Corry. Troopers responded to the scene and investigated the death as a criminal homicide. An autopsy performed on Tuesday, Feb. 27 confirmed the manner of death was homicide. Following a 5-day investigation, police said, troopers arrested Cranston.
