STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The National Weather Service in State College has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Warren and Forest Counties that is in effect until 2 p.m. Friday (Dec. 23).
UPDATE, 2 p.m. 12/23/22: The NWS has extended this advisory to last until 7 p.m. Friday.
Severe wind chill and snow are expected, with total snow accumulations of one to three inches, and winds gusting as high as 60 mph.
“The snow combined with the increasing wind, sharply falling temperatures, and initially wet roads may lead to flash freeze and extremely dangerous travel conditions,” the NWS said. “”The cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.”
The NWS advised people to prepare for the dangerous cold.
“Avoid going outside during the coldest parts of the day,” the advisory said. “Dress in layers and cover exposed skin. Wear a hat and gloves. Frostbite and hypothermia can occur within minutes if precautions are not taken.”
Winter weather safety and preparedness information can be found at weather.gov/winter. The Pennsylvania Public Utilities Commission issued similar preparedness information last week.
The NWS advised motorists to plan on ice and snow-covered roads.
“The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission remind motorists to adjust speeds based on driving conditions as winter weather impacts will include snow-covered roads and limited visibility,” the advisory said.
