Fair’s Annual Milk Chugging Contest Provides Fun, Raises Awareness

PITTSFIELD, Pa. – Travis Childress likes winning.

On Tuesday at the Warren County Fair Childress Childress, a Tiona native, was indeed a winner, taking first place in the kids’ milk chugging competition.

“I don’t drink milk a lot,” Childress said.

The objective was to drink as much milk as you can in 30 seconds. The contest is held at the Warren County Fair every year, and while it’s fun, it also helps promote getting enough dairy as part of a daily diet.

“Being in dairy promotion, we try and get the word out on three servings of dairy per day,” said Katilin Sleeman, Warren County Dairy Princess. “We include this as something fun. It’s one way for them to enjoy a serving and the kids always have a good time.”

And everyone’s a winner, but, as Childress pointed out, he was THE winner.

“I did it so I could win,” Childress said.

All of the kids received prizes afterward.

“They all get a mini version of a normal milk jug to drink as much as they can, and they call get prizes,” Sleeman said. “The kids get stickers and keychains and things like that.”

And while she hasn’t done it herself in a while, Sleeman said there have been hardly any issues over the past several years.

“The last time I did it I got really sick,” Sleeman said. “I haven’t done it in years. But the kids enjoy it. Last year we did it and we didn’t have one kid get sick. We’ve had a couple of good years.”
