Dozens Turn Out to Build Bikes for Can’d Aid Bike Build

May 22, 2023

WARREN, Pa. – Nearly 40 volunteers headed to Kinzua Beach early Sunday morning to build bikes for Warren County first-graders.

The bikes, 120 total, will be donated during a special event at the Warren County Career Center on Monday afternoon. The donation was created as a partnership between the Warren County Chamber of Business and Industry, the Trails at Jakes Rocks, Can’d Aid, the Warren County School District, and the Warren Public Library.

“The volunteers knocked this one out of the park, again,” WCCBI’s Jim Decker said. “We’re kind of spoiled that way here in Warren County. The community stepped up big when we were given this opportunity. I can’t thank the community and our sponsors enough.”

All the organizers on-hand Sunday said the event wouldn’t have been possible without the fundraising efforts of Sugar Grove’s Eric Webber.

“The first year we raised enough money for 30 bikes,” Webber said. “Then last year we did 65 bikes in the Erie area and now this year we really ramped it up and did 120 here in Warren County.”

For Webber, it’s all about sharing his enthusiasm for biking with the next generation.

“I started biking a lot about 12 years ago maybe 13 years ago now,” Webber said. “Just the feeling it was to just be outside to be able to do something like that, for me, was amazing. I wish I had started when I was younger. So this is my chance to show a younger generation what’s out there and what’s available.”

The build included more than just bikes, as each bike will also come with a care package.

“Care packages include a helmet and a book donated by Warren Public Library,” WCCBI’s Savannah Casey told Your Daily Local on Saturday’s Coffee & a Conversation. “PNC Bank donated some things as well.”
