WAHS Hosts Military “Signing Day”

May 20, 2024

WARREN, Pa. – High school signing days have typically been reserved for those students pursuing athletic endeavors, as they sign a Letter of Intent to play for a specific college or university.

On Monday, Warren Area High School put a patriotic twist on signing day with a ceremony to celebrate those students who are planning to serve in the US Armed Forces after graduation.

“Today we are recognizing those that are going off into the military much like we recognize our athletes,” WAHS Counselor Lori Hahn said.

Five seniors, Brodie McElhatten, Sam Harvey, Eliza Brook, Aidan Zdarko, and Jayce Turner, participated in the inaugural event.

“I was trying to come up with something history-like since I taught all these kids back at Beaty,” Hahn said. “I think of back to ancient Rome and Greece with the whole idea of serving your country, it’s so very important. I just think it’s awesome that all of you want to do this.”

Each student had a summary of their interests, favorite teachers, advice for students, and why they chose to serve.

“I wanted to be part of something bigger than myself,” Zdarko, who plans to attend the US Air Force Academy, said. “I owe it to the country for the freedoms and opportunities I have been lucky to receive.”

Harvey, who will commission in the Army through West Point, said he “wants to find purpose in my profession.”

McElhatten, who will enlist in the Army, wants to enter into aircraft structural repair.

“I want to re-sign for 20 years and retire out of the Army,” McElhatten said.

Brook, attending Massachusetts Maritime Academy, plans to study marine transportation for a Coast Guard career.

“(I want) to study marine transportation and do the US Coast Guard Auxiliary Program in hopes to commission upon graduation.”

Turner chose the Army “to experience other cultures.”

Full bios on all five students will be published in the coming days on Your Daily Local.
