JAMESTOWN, NY – Area high school students and recent grads have an opportunity to get hands-on experience exploring careers and learning how to search for employment. This summer, SUNY Jamestown Community College will launch a new Summer Explore program.
Led by JCC’s Career Services staff, the program is available to anyone, regardless of their school enrollment status.
“We intend to show students how to explore their potential and desired careers,” Annie Chartrand, Career Services coordinator for JCC explained. “We can strengthen each participant’s skills and abilities, and empower them to realize their career goals.”
There are two program options available. The first is a three-week day camp held from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Monday-Thursdays from July 11-28. Participants will learn what it means to be career-ready, and during the course of the camp will develop their own resume, cover letter, and LinkedIn account. Career exploration activities include field trips, guest speakers, and mini-projects.
Attendees will also have access to soft skills and career assessments and will receive tips on how to build a professional network. Lunch is provided, and space is limited for this free workshop.
“Our hope is to connect students to hands-on experiences that expand their learning outside the classroom,” Chartrand shared. “We can customize experiences, focusing on individual strengths and potential, and give them the tools they need to explore careers on their own.”
The second option is a more individualized, a la carte format. Participants can choose from a variety of career preparation and exploration services. Career Services will help tailor a program that suits their needs. This program is available to anyone at no cost and is available Monday through Thursday from May 18-August 11.
