Wright scores Super Late Model win at Raceway 7

May 22, 2022

CONNEAUT, OHIO –  The Evergreen Lake Park Campground Super Late Models raced at Raceway 7 for the first time this season and it was Chad Wright walking away with his first-ever Super Late win at his home track.

Brian McGarvie took home the win, his second in a row, in the Sunnyside Farms Transit Mini Stocks while Mike Potosky scored his first win on the season in the Whelen Engineering UMP Modifieds. Joe Stajnrajh won his first of the year with his Campbell’s Mini Storage Street Stock and Jarett Young, the reigning Lakeview Ford Economods champion, showed championship form in winning his feature.

After heat races in each division features were run with the Campbell’s Mini Storage Street Stocks first on the docket. On the initial attempt to start the event Chris Withers, a former class champion, spun his mount in turn three. In the ensuing pile-up Paul Davis, Jamie Duncan, Kyle Zimmerman, Ray Gregory, and Steve Horvath also got involved, blocking the track and stopping the race under a red flag. Duncan and Horvath required a tow back to the pit while Gregory was able to drive away. Duncan, Zimmerman, and Horvath were out of the event while Davis and Gregory were able to restart.

When lap one was finally complete it was Rich Dean leading the way over Joe Stajnrajh, Ron Boardman, Davis, and Pat Fielding. Dean looked like the man to beat after the restart but he had mechanical ails and retired pitside at lap three, turning the lead over to Stajnrajh with Davis, Boardman, Fielding, and Withers rounding out the top five.

At lap five Withers again spun his ill-handling machine, this time in turn four. Jacob Wheeler’s race ended against the wall in turn four at lap eight, just past halfway. At this point Stajnrajh was the leader, followed by Davis, Boardman, David Baker, and an exceptionally strong and determined Withers. Under the caution for Wheeler Davis pulled to the infield with unknown problems.

By lap eleven Withers was trying to get by Jonathan Davis for third but falling back to fourth at twelve laps, then completing the pass at the white flag. At the finish, it was Stajnrajh, Boardman, Withers, Baker, and Fielding after Jonathan Davis spun on the final corner of the race.

The Whelen Engineering Modifieds were next up with former champions Mike Potosky and Nate Young at the fore. Potosky led lap one with Young in hot pursuit. Josh McDonald was third with former champion Troy Johnson fourth and defending champion Joel Watson filling out the top five. Young slowed at lap three, the victim of a dropped driveshaft. Also at lap three caution flew for debris in turn four (the errant driveshaft?).

As the field was getting realigned, J J Bamdtzreider and Dennis Dellinger spun on the front straight. For green the order was Potosky, McDonald, Bud Watson, Joel Watson, and Casey Bowers. McDonald slid wide in turn four at lap five, dropping back to fourth. At the halfway point the top five remained the same but Joel Watson came to third at lap thirteen. Then, in heavy lapped traffic, Watson took the lead in turn two then had a tire go down with two laps remaining. At the checkers it was Potosky, Johnson, McDonald, Casey Bowers, and Dustin DeMattia.

The Super Late Models made their first of six appearances this season with twelve cars taking the green, Eric Wilson and Darrell Bossard in the front row. Wilson, Bossard, Chad Wright, Bump Hedman, and Cory Sines were the leaders at the end of lap one.

The first caution came on lap two when Sines spun into turn three, ending up at the guardrail between turns three and four. When green reappeared it was Wilson leading Bossard, Wright, Hedman, and Steve Kania. Kania was fourth at three laps. With four complete it was Logan Zarin spinning in turn two and heading pitside.

The fight for the lead after green was between Wilson and Wright with Wilson steadily putting distance between him and Wright until his lead was 1.083 second at the lap eight, then Wright started to close the gap, getting to .566 at the halfway point. At this point Bossard, Hedman, and Kania filled out the top five.

Will Pinckney spun at lap thirteen in turns three and four. At green the order remained the same but Wright powered to the lead in turn one. Yellow again in turn two for a spin by Dan Tercho. When the race resumed, since a lap had not been completed since the caution, Wilson was again second but lost power on the restart and drifted to a halt at the end of the back straight. The car would not refire so he was pushed to the pit.

At this green it was Wright leading Bossard, Hedman, Kania, and Sines. Hedman was third at lap fourteen and was challenging at lap seventeen, but falling to .305 second behind Wright at the finish. The top five were Wright, Bossard, Hedman, Kania, and Sines.

Zoey Gill and Shawn McBride brought the Sunnyside Farms Transit Mini Stock field to green with McBride leading lap one over Gill, Derrick Randolph, Alexis Vogt, and Brian McGarvie. McGarvie was fourst at lap two, and third at lap three when yellow flew after the rear bumper cover fell off Randolph’s car. At lap four McGarvie was second, looking for his second consecutive victory.

At lap six McGarvie went by Gill to lead her, defending champion Jessica Harvey, Jordan Wheeler, and Alexis Vogt at halfway. Vogt took over fourth at lap ten. The finish wound up McGarvie, Gill, Harvey, Vogt, and Wheeler. Three of the top five were females!

The final event of night number two was for the Lakeview Ford Economods. Kyle Layton and Jaritt Young brought the field to green with caution coming as Jeremy Double spun in turn two on lap one.

At the restart, it was Layton leading Young, Mitchell Judson Fell, and week one winner Dennis Lunger through lap one. Lunger was fourth by lap three then went wide in turn two on lap four when debris was spotted in turn three, slowing the race under caution.

For the green it was Layton, Young, Lunger, Wright, and Garrett Calvert, last week’s winner. At the green Zac Etzel, Emily Stoyer, and Mike Biehler spun in turn one. Etzel required a two from the track. At the next green, it was Dennis Dellinger and Chris Runyon bringing out yellow, spinning in turn one. At this point, Layton exited pitside from the lead. The top five at lap five were now Young, Lunger, Wright, Jake Eucher, and week one winner Garrett Calvert.

At the drop of the green it was Stoyer and Norman for the caution. At the six laps Wright and Lunger were side by side behind Young with Calvert fourth and Eucker fifth. Gary Olson spun at lap eight and Branden Porter was in the wall at lap nine, both bringing caution to the raceway. Lunger went way wide at lap two and slipped back to fourth. Then at twelve it was Eucker’s time to get wide and lose ground. At the finish it was defending champion Jarett Young’s first visit to winner’s circle this season, followed by Wright, Lunger, Calvert, and Eucker.
