Wolverines Return to Field, Show Promise in Setback to Smethport

August 28, 2021

SHEFFIELD, Pa. – It wasn’t a win on the scoreboard, but just to be back on the field was a triumph for the Sheffield Wolverines.

After competing in just one game in 2020 before canceling their season, Sheffield returned to Wolverine Mountain on Saturday against Smethport. The result was a 49-6 setback, but there was still plenty to be encouraged about.

For one, the Wolverines forced multiple turnovers on defense, converting one of those into a touchdown, courtesy of a Malique Outland 77-yard rumble return for a score in the third quarter.

This was a more disciplined, more fundamentally sound football team that Sheffield showed under the direction of first-year head coach Mike Barr.

Barr spoke about that opportunistic defense as well as more observations about the game:

The Wolverines had to deal with Smethport senior quarterback Noah Lent, the 2020 D9and10Sports.com Jim Kelly District 9 Player of the Year.

Lent was magnificent, accounting for four touchdowns through the air, two on the ground, as well as a 2-point conversion pass. He finished with 170 yards passing and 96 on the ground.

For the Wolverines, senior quarterback Michael Mihalic completed six passes for 49 yards, including a 22-yarder to Dylan Hardwidk, while Tony Richards had four receptions for 22 yards.

Sheffield’s defensive line created pressure throughout the contest, and freshmen Colby Barr, Derek Kendrick, Angel Rodriguez and Marquis Alston all showed promise, as well as senior Cyrus Sears, who had a sack and multiple pressures.

The Wolverines return to action next Friday at Union/A-C Valley in a game that will be played at A-C Valley.
