Warren Youth Climbing League Now Underway

March 31, 2023

WARREN, Pa. – Competition climbing continues to grow, and now Warren County kids have another avenue to explore the increasingly-popular sport.

The Warren Youth Climbing League is an elementary league available to young climbers in the area. Four of the five league teams had their first meet on Monday, March 27 at Goat Fort.

“The Warren Youth Climbing League is now underway, and many new kids and their families are getting a taste of climbing as a sport,” Goat Fort’s Dana Harrington said. “This program is entirely local. All practices and meets are right here in Warren at The Goat Fort.”

While the Goat Fort Thundering Herd travel team competitions are predicated on individual scores, the WYCL is a team-scored event.

“Unlike other climbing competitions which focus on individuals, the WYCL is a team sport,” Harrington said. “Climbers attempted to earn points for their team by climbing increasingly difficult routes, and each of the nearly 30 climbers was able to contribute to their team score.”

Bent Run outscored Allegheny Outfitters 2601-2124, and Whirley Drinkworks edged out Kinzua Vet Clinic 2408-2332. Slick Text had a bye week.

Local businesses sponsored the teams, while volunteers help the meets run smoothly.

“The role of league sponsors and volunteers cannot be overstated,” Harrington said. “This program would not exist without Allegheny Outfitters, Whirley Drinkworks, Kinzua Vet Clinic, Bent Run Brewing, and Slick Text, not to mention the slew of volunteers from our climbing community who are assisting as coaches and officials to make sure these kids get the best possible experience.”

The WYCL will have its second meet on April 3 where Slick Text will take on Bent Run and Allegheny Outfitters will face Kinzua Vet Clinic, and Whirley Drinkworks will have a bye week.
