Staying Alive: Warren Boys Major All-Stars Earn Thrilling Win Over Brookville

July 1, 2022

WARREN, Pa. – In a game full of close calls, Aaron Shene, Broc Bryan, Wesley Wilcox and the Warren Boys Major All-Stars stayed alive with a 4-3 elimination game win over Brookville.

Trailing 3-2 going into the bottom of the fourth, Wyatt Wilson led off with a walk, setting the stage for Shene, who ripped an RBI triple into the gap. The throw to third was offline, allowing Shene to trot home with what proved to be the game-winning run.

Bryan came on in relief of starter and winning pitcher Tanner Stuart, slamming the door with four strikeouts in two innings of work.

Brookville threatened, but was unable to push the tying run across. With one out in the fifth, Cody Householder struck out but went to first as the ball went to the backstop. The throw went into right field, with Householder going all the way to third, but he was ruled out on the play after failing to step on second base.

In the sixth, Bryan worked around a walk and an error with one out, getting the next two batters to strike out and ground out to end the game.

The game was tied 1-1 after the first inning, as Brookville scored on an RBI groundout off the bat of starting pitcher Owen Weaver, while Wilcox’s RBI single brought in Stuart, who also singled.

A pair of tough breaks led to a 3-1 deficit for Warren in the third inning, as Householder was on third and took home on a heads-up play and Landon Smith scored moments later on a wild pitch.

No matter, as Warren rallied. With one out in the bottom half of the third, Cole Fitzgerald reached on an error. Bryan followed and hit what was originally ruled a two-run home run to tie the game. After discussion by the umpires, however, it was decided that the ball went underneath a hole in the fence, with Bryan now standing on second with a ground-rule double and Fitzgerald on third.

Wilcox’s second RBI single of the game got Warren back to within one, with Shene giving them the lead an inning later.

Stuart pitched four strong innings to get the win and also went 1-for-3 at the plate.

Bryan also drew a walk in addition to his double, while Wilcox was 2-for-3 and also reached on an error in his third at-bat.

With the win, Warren advances to get a rematch with Kane on July 6. Kane handed Warren its only loss of the tournament, 4-1. Kane was bested by St. Marys, 13-11 on Thursday.
