Sheffield Rally Comes up Just Short Against Smethport

December 9, 2023

SHEFFIELD, Pa. – Visiting Smethport held off a frantic last-minute rally from Sheffield to pick up a 47-45 win.

The Hubbers led 46-40 with under 50 seconds to play before Sheffield got back in the game.

A Jack Chapman jumper in the lane with just under 45 seconds left to close the gap to 46-42.

The Wolverines then got a steal on the inbounds, and Allen Eaton hit a 3-pointer from the corner to make it 46-45 with 32 seconds left.

Brentton McDowell then made one of two free throws for Smethport with 27.6 seconds left.

Following a Sheffield timeout with 23.1 to go, Dylan Harwick drove the lane only to see his layup go off the mark. Colby Barr, though, grabbed the offensive rebound and tried a putback that rattled in an out.

Cole Burdick got the rebound for Smethport and was fouled with 7.6 seconds left.

Burdick, though, missed both free throws, and the Wolverines got the rebound and pushed the ball up the court.

Harwick’s contested three, though, from the top of the key was a little short hitting the front of the rim, and Smethport got the rebound as time ran out.

McDowell led Smethport with 17 points with Colin Okerlund adding 14 points and Burdick eight.

Leihden Wotorson had 17 points for Sheffield while Hardwick added 13 points.
