Sen. Casey Tours Warren Riverfront

September 20, 2022

WARREN, Pa. – A group of local officials and business owners welcomed U.S. Senator Bob Casey to Warren recently as he toured the riverfront in Warren and discussed the ongoing effort to redevelop the area.

Commissioner Jeff Eggleston, City Council Members John Wortman and Phil Gilbert, County Planning and Zoning Director Dan Glotz, City Manager Nancy Freeknock, and Allegheny Outfitters owner Piper Van Ord all had opportunities to ask and answer questions for the Senator on the hour-long trip.

“We truly appreciate you coming here, Senator,” said Council Member John Wortman. “This effort to redevelop the riverfront is an important project with many economic impacts.”

The group shared the overall plan for the riverfront redevelopment, including reworking the roadway, expanding parking and walking paths, and expanding river access with a boat launch and greenspaces.

The group discussed the $7.25 million price tag for redevelopment and that $2.5 million in matching funds had already been raised but that they needed help to get the rest of the way.

“This is a very beautiful area, and we need to do what we can to make this project happen,” Casey said. “The work to this point is exceptional, and it’s not hard to see it could be even better.”

The visit was before the announcement that the Build Back Better Challenge funding was not awarded to the project team; however, the Senator plans to continue to work with the community to explore other avenues to secure funding for the needed renovation.

“This area has benefited greatly from state investment to redevelop the main building,” Commissioner Jeff Eggleston said. “We need federal investment to see the rest of the area achieve its full potential.”
