Police Release Names of Victims in Fatal Accident on I-86

ELLICOTT, NY – New York State Police have released the names of the victims involved in a fatal accident on Interstate 86 Saturday.

According to police, NYSP-Jamestown troopers responded to an accident in the westbound lane of I-86 between exits 12 and 13 for a vehicle collision at approximately 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28.

Police said a 2009 Toyota Camry, driven by Mathew A. Berry, 30 of Randolph, was heading east in the westbound lane (traveling the wrong way) without headlights. Berry’s vehicle was hit head-on by a 2019 Dodge Ram 1500 driven by Todd A. Town, 57 of Jamestown. The Ram was then struck from behind by a 2020 Freightliner, according to police.

Berry was pronounced dead at the scene. Town, and his passenger, Sandra L. Town, 54 of Jamestown, were taken to separate hospitals. Todd Town later died from his injuries at UPMC Chautauqua. Sandra Town is listed in serious condition at UPMC Hamot in Erie.

The driver of the Freightliner, whose name was not released, suffered no injuries, according to police.

Police said their investigation determined that Berry suffered from mental illness and had been reported missing to Chautauqua County 911 on Jan. 28.

NYSP Collision Reconstruction, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, and the Bureau of Criminal Investigations are assisting NYSP in the ongoing investigation.
