A Helping Hand: Pleasant VFD Giving Back to Help One of Its Own

July 19, 2023

PLEASANT TWP, Pa. – The Pleasant Township Volunteer Fire Department is giving back to help one of its own.

Danny Thomson’s home in Starbrick was severely damaged recently in a fire, and the Pleasant VFD is going to hold a bingo benefit to help cover some of his financial costs.

Bingo will be at 6 p.m. on Thursday (July 20) at the Pleasant VFD social hall.

Thomson is a Pleasant VFD member himself and also serves as an EMT.

“We want to help out one of our own,” said Kathy Johnson, President of the Pleasant VFD. “The way we run bingo is we’ll have the regular payouts and then anything we bring in that we would normally take to the bank we’ll write a check to Danny.”

Not only is Thomas a Pleasant VFD member and an EMT, but he is also one of the normal callers at Pleasant’s bingo nights.

Johnson said that all things considered, Thomson is doing well.

“I’ve spoken to him and he’s doing okay,” Johnson said. “He’s living with his girlfriend temporarily and he did find his cats alive, so he didn’t lose any pets, which was great.”

Thomson, who has been with the department for about five years, runs the ambulance.

“He’s still waiting to hear from his insurance, so he’s not exactly sure what his coverage is going to be,” Johnson said.

The acts of kindness from the Pleasant VFD are nothing new, as Johnson points out, the department loves to help out in times of need, especially with their own.

“A couple of years ago, Mike Barr and his wife in Cherry Grove, we did a benefit for them,” Johnson said. “Ben and Jen Chase lost their home and we did a bingo benefit for them. It’s just our small way of supporting and giving back to our fellow firefighters.”

Barr is the Cherry Grove VFD fire chief, while Ben Chase is the Sugar Grove VFD fire chief.

“We really just want to show our support,” Johnson said.
