Phyllis L. Mickelson Carlberg

July 21, 2021

Phyllis L. Mickelson Carlberg passed away on Wednesday, July 14, 2021 at the John and Orpha Blair Hospice Home in Warren, Pa. Phyllis graced the earth with her kind spirit for 97 years. Her family and friends will sorely miss her.

Phyllis was born in Sugar Grove, Pa., on May 11, 1924. She graduated from Sugar Grove Joint Vocational School, where she enjoyed her friends, studying, and playing basketball. After high school, she did a short stint working at a machine shop in Corry, Pa., during World War II. She then went on to Rochester University, Strong Memorial School of Nursing in Rochester, New York where she graduated with a diploma in nursing with the Nurse Cadet Corps in 1947. She practiced as a registered nurse in New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. After her nursing career, she worked at Lander Elementary School then later at Blair in Warren.

Phyllis married Paul Henry Carlberg Jr. on June 12, 1948, at the Sugar Grove United Methodist Church. Most of their years were spent in Sugar Grove, but they also resided in Erie, Ohio, Massachusetts, Florida, and New York prior to returning to Sugar Grove. Phyllis always had an affinity for Sugar Grove. Phyllis later resided at the Rouse Suites in Youngsville and then the Rouse Home, where she was well-loved by the staff.

Phyllis was quite the artist in her younger years. She was an excellent seamstress and spent much time knitting and crocheting. She enjoyed reading, listening to music, gardening, and birdwatching. Most of all she loved her family. She always had loved aplenty and a prayer for her family. It was a mutual treasure for us all.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Henry Carlberg Jr. in 2008. Her son, Paul Dane Carl-berg in 2020. Her son-in-law, Larry Himes in 2019. Her parents, Delmar and Caroline (Barrett) Mickelson. Her brother, Vernon Van Horn. And her sister-in-law, Selene Van Horn.

She is survived by her daughter, Caroline Carlberg Martin (Terry) of Spring-field, Va., and their sons: Daniel of Springfield, Virginia and Adam (Mary), and grandchildren, Owen, Catherine, and Kara of San Francisco, Calif. Daughter, Mary Carlberg Hall (Phil) of Sugar Grove, Pa., and children: Ben (Larissa) of Pittsburgh, Pa,. Megan (TJ) of Reading, Pa., Kathleen (Daniel) of Natrona Heights, Pa, and grandchildren, Gray and Walter. Daughter, Susan Carlberg Himes of Warren, Pa., and children: Mathew (Julie) of Warren, Pa., Curtis (Allison) of Bellingham, Wash. Leslie (Jim) of Tidioute, Pa,. Tyson (Charlotte) of New York City, and grandchildren: Braidin and Mason. Daughter-in-law, Beverly Carlberg. Niece: Navarre Swanson (Robert) and daughter, Vanessa. Sister-in-law, Louise Stuart and her son, Donald.

There will be a celebration of life on Saturday, July 24, 2021, at the Free Methodist Church Recreation Building, Jamestown Road, Sugar Grove, Pa. The visitation will be at 11 a.m., with the service to begin at noon and the burial to follow at the Swedish Methodist Cemetery. A luncheon will be served after return to the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Sugar Grove Free Methodist Church, the Sugar Grove Free Library, or the Warren Cancer Center in her memory.
