Martz-Kohl Observatory to Welcome Starkey as Guest Speaker

February 10, 2021

FREWSBURG, N.Y. – On Wednesday, Feb. 17, the Martz-Kohl Observatory  (Marshal Martz Memorial Astronomical Association, Inc) will welcome Mr. Donn Starkey as a guest speaker where he will be presenting, “The Science of Variable Stars.”

This webinar by Donn  Starkey will explain how stars develop and why some stars spend part of their lifespan being variable stars. Variable stars are stars that change brightness. These strange stars can seem to blink from bright to-dim, or even on-and-off in brightness over periods of a fraction of a second to years, depending on the type of variable star. Mr. Starkey’s presentations are geared for the general public who appreciate the night sky and are interested in science. Mr. Starkey lives in Northern Indiana where he spends most of his time using his .41-meter Ritchie-Chretien telescope to observe long-period variable stars and cataclysmic binary variable stars.

The public is welcome to attend this free presentation via ZOOM. Information and a link to join the  ZOOM speaking event is located on the Martz-Kohl Observatory website at:  https://martzobservatory.org/zoom/.

The presentation will begin at 7:30 with “virtual” doors to the event opening at 7:15. Recent celestial photos taken from the observatory as well as information about  upcoming observatory events can also be found on the Martz-Kohl Observatory Facebook page at:  https://www.facebook.com/www.martzobservatory.org/

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Martz-Kohl Observatory remains closed to the public. In an effort to continue with the mission to inform, educate, and inspire the general public and support teaching in the sciences of astronomy and physics, the observatory is moving forward with virtual events.
