Getting Defensive: Warren Girls Earn Big Region 6 Win over McDowell

January 19, 2022

WARREN, Pa. – Riley Childress scored seven of her 11 points in the fourth quarter as Warren held off McDowell in a key Region 6 battle, 32-26.

Childress also had a key assist on a Halle Kuzminski bucket in the fourth quarter, and Sammie Ruhlman knocked down a pair of late free throws to ice it.

Warren led 12-8 at halftime in the defensive slugfest.

“When we went into the locker room I said let’s look at the bright side of this, we just held a good team to eight points in the half,” said Warren coach Lisa LaVan. “Defensively, we’re really starting to come along. Offensively, we had looks, we just didn’t put them in as much as we normally do.”

Emma Ruhlman scored a game-high 15 points for Warren, including seven in the third quarter as the lead grew to as many as eight.

“They executed the game plan perfectly,” LaVan said of her team. “Everybody did their job.”

Amaiya Nelson had a three-point play to give McDowell a brief 22-21 lead before back-to-back buckets by Childress.

Nelson finished with five points, while Caylen Spano had a team-high eight for McDowell.

“It was nice to get out there and get a good win today,” LaVan said.

A big week continues for Warren on Thursday when they face fellow Region 6 unbeaten Villa.
