The images that I share are intended to give a very brief snapshot of each place. In many cases, these shots do not reflect what I would consider to be my “best” photographs in a purely artistic sense. These are highlights to push back on the cabin fever that many people are feeling and to inspire your next trip, near or far, when 2020 is in the rearview mirror.
My trip to the Faroe Islands was partly inspired by a previous road trip through Norway and my future plans to visit Iceland. One of the appealing aspects of the Faroes is their compact size. From a “home base” in the village of Saksun, the entire island group was easily accessible. This meant that Faroe Islands didn’t require a large time commitment to hit all of the highlights, though one week could have easily been spun into three without boredom setting in.
Faroe Islands
The Faroe Islands are an autonomous territory of Denmark located in the North Atlantic approximately 200 miles north of Scotland and halfway between Norway and Iceland. As of 2020, the population stands at about 52,000. The official languages are Faroese and Danish, though most travelers will have no problem getting by with English. The climate is cool with a relatively narrow band of temperatures, ranging from an average of 54F during summer and 41F in winter. For reference, all photographs shown here were shot in early May.
