Five Medalists Help Wolverines to 8th-Place Team Finish at Hickory Invitational

December 5, 2022

HERMITAGE, Pa. – Sheffield had a strong start to open the season as five Wolverines earned medals at the Hickory Invitational Tournament Dec. 2-3.

As a team, Sheffield finished 8th overall out of 22 teams with 97.5 points. The Wolverines finished 1.5 points in front of Johnsonburg (96.0) for the best place among District 9 teams (Kane, Port Allegany, Coudersport, and Redbank Valley also competed). Fort LeBoeuf took home the team title with 241 points.

“We had a huge effort from all of our wrestlers moving forward rounds and scoring team points,” Sheffield coach Tom Holden said. “It was so good to see our kids wrestling with such determination and seeing it pay off for them.”

Chase Kyler (127), Collin Brown (135), and Trenton Mead (172) each finished fourth in their respective weight classes. AJ Barnes (6th-121) and Matt Lobdell (7th-189) also brought home medals.

The Wolverines, who were without a number of wrestlers this weekend due to illness, open the dual match season on Tuesday at Oswayo Valley.

“We are looking forward to getting healthy and back to full strength,” Holden said.
