Edinboro Football Opener Canceled Due to COVID

August 30, 2021

EDINBORO, Pa. – Edinboro Athletics announced Monday that the football season-opener at Grand Valley State was canceled “due to COVID considerations.”

The University later confirmed that there was a positive COVID case within the football program that forced the cancellation.

“Edinboro Athletics can confirm that one football student-athlete tested positive for COVID-19,” the University said in a statement. “In accordance with Erie County Health Department’s mandates for quarantine, student-athletes within the football program will not be released in time for the previously scheduled contest. We will provide updates as they become available.”

In a statement on its website, Grand Valley State said it would “explore all options for an opponent” for this weekend.

“We are obviously disappointed with the cancelation of the game,” said GVS head coach Matt Mitchell. “Our players were looking forward to getting back on the field for this game, but we will regroup and show the resilience this group has displayed over the last two years.”

The Fighting Scots are scheduled to host Shippensburg University on Sept. 11 at noon at Sox Harrison Stadium in Edinboro.
