Early Results Suggest Most Students Back in Buildings Next Year; Graduation Plans Still Being Discussed

April 14, 2021

RUSSELL, Pa. – Early returns from the latest Warren County School District parent survey show nearly 90 percent of respondents expect to have their children attend classes in-person during the 2021-22 school year.

During the WCSD Board of Directors meeting Monday, WCSD Superintendent said nearly 25 percent of the district’s families had already responded to the survey. Barring any unforeseen changes, almost all of them said they will have their children in a traditional brick-and-mortar setting.

“At this point, 88 percent of parents say that, if all things remain exactly the way they are right now, they will be sending their kids back to school,” Stewart said. “And that’s been consistent over the week.”

If the number holds, it would represent about a 15 percent increase in families expecting to send students back to school buildings over the start of this school year.

Though there has been an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases around the region, Stewart said that as of 3 p.m. Monday, there were no WCSD staff members out due to quarantine. Loss of staff due to contact tracing was the primary reason for the district’s move to remote learning in December.

GRADUATION

While nothing has been finalized, Stewart said currently all four high schools are making plans to hold outdoor graduation ceremonies.

“They’re all looking at their own football stadiums,” Stewart said.

The issue is finding an alternative venue if there is inclement weather on graduation day.

“Typically what happens is they will plan for an outdoor, and then if it’s bad weather move inside,” Stewart said. “As things sit right now that’s not an option. We’re gonna have to be flexible, but over the last year we’ve become nothing but flexible and we’re going to try to get them what they need.”

No decisions have been made yet regarding the number of tickets each graduate will receive.
