Dragons Ready for Stiff Test in Cathedral Prep

September 10, 2021

WARREN, Pa. – The Warren Dragons are eager to continue proving the doubters wrong.

The Dragons enter Friday night’s contest with a record of 2-0 following a 33-0 win over Conneaut and a 26-14 win over Harbor Creek in Region 5 action.

On Friday, they will hit the road for the first time this season, traveling to Dollinger Field to take on the Cathedral Prep Ramblers.

The Ramblers are coming off back-to-back lopsided wins over Erie High to begin the season and are the No. 5 ranked Class 5A team in the state in the Pennsylvania Football News rankings.

That doesn’t bother a Warren team that was picked to finish second to last in the region that already owns wins over two of the teams predicted to finish ahead of them.

Prep gets to play someone other than Erie this week after a pair of lopsided wins over the Royals, while Warren has had a terrific beginning to its season with a shutout of Conneaut followed by a 26-14 win over Harbor Creek.

Carter Barnes has thrown for 241 yards and three touchdowns and ran for two more scores for the Ramblers, who feature the running duo of Mike Parks (158 yards, 4 touchdowns) and Suhtaun Lewis (150 yards, 2 touchdowns). Tyson Simon and Demario Crawford are the top receiving targets.

Warren’s defense has been suffocating, establishing control at the line of scrimmage in both victories. Coach Mark Morelli has stressed that this team is all about football, and the early returns certainly indicate that.

The defense has been led by Nick Pennucci (18 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss), Kody Vega (14 tackles, 1 sack), Rashad Fofana (12 tackles, 1 sack), Easton Hultberg (11 tackles), Derek McMeans (10 tackles, 1 interception), Alan McAllister (2 TFLs, 1.5 sacks) and Justice Green (1.5 sacks).

Sophomore quarterback Eric Dippold has thrown for 308 yards and five touchdowns through two games and also ran for a score. Ben White has been his top target with 158 yards receiving and three scores. Tommy Nyquist has 205 yards rushing and two touchdowns and also has a receiving touchdown, and Ethan Senz (142 yards rushing, 1 touchdown) is also a threat on the ground for the Dragons, who have yielded just 14 points through two games.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. from Dollinger Field.
