Crary Art Gallery Set to Host Two New Exhibitions

May 30, 2023

WARREN, Pa. – The Crary Art Gallery is hosting two new exhibitions, beginning on Saturday, June 3, and running through July 2.

The opening reception on Saturday for Dias Prabu: Mangaranto In Time All Are Together (in the main gallery) and Jessica Ellen Boice: Curious in Nature will be from 12-6 p.m. Admission is always free.

“The drawings that I make on fabric using the drawing batik technique, bring various things together that relate to each other,” Prabu said in a statement. “These are the elements that I build into my batik works: pieces of dreams, live imaginations that are affiliated with socio-cultural patterns/movements, as well as the intersection of traditional and contemporary cultures. In this exhibition, the works are not just images of tradition and culture, but also are a manifestation of acculturation through ethnic and digital music, combined with performance art, then collided thoroughly into one amalgamated show. Moreover, through my batik narratives,

“I want to evoke dimensions of past memories from audiences. I want to be a small link in every dream that has ever existed in their minds, sharing with them the rural atmosphere of the Batak lands, and how there is an element of togetherness in differences, touching on the Batak advice taken by the wanderers – things that have meaning in all lives.”

Boice, a Warren resident, describes her work as how she interprets the natural world in watercolor.

“I am a curious observer and have always been an artist, writer, and maker,” Boice said in a statement. “My heart is in painting watercolors, and I have a love of botanical art, striving for a painterly realism in my work. The paintings here are largely from photos I’ve taken in the forest, my yard, and garden – as well as supermarket produce and some interesting ‘odds and ends’ around my home. A few of the paintings are inspired by my interest in foraging wild edibles, which lends yet another layer to learning new ways of seeing, and how to better convey my observations in my paintings.

“Living with the Allegheny National Forest on my doorstep, I love to find beautiful leaves, acorns, flowers and fungi. If it has an interesting perspective, I want to photograph it – and paint it.”
