Conservation District, DCNR to Team With Local Landowner for Tree Planting Informational Tour

March 20, 2023

PITTSFIELD, Pa. – The Warren County Conservation, in conjunction with Brian Christman and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, will be hosting an informational tour on multifunctional tree planting.

Why is planting trees and shrubs next to streams a good idea? To find out, the public is invited to Christman’s property (about a half mile up Barton Run Rd. from Rt. 6 in Pittsfield, just past the Warren County Fairgrounds) on Saturday, April 29.

Landowner Brian Christman and DCNR Service Forester Taylor Chamberlin will discuss how these multifunctional plantings are beneficial to the health of soil and water resources, as well as creating and enhancing wildlife habitat.

Chamberlin will explain how to develop a successful tree planting plan and the importance of maintenance as the seedlings are becoming established to the site.

Christman will also discuss what other management practices he implemented on his property and why they work for him and his goals as a landowner.

Warren County Conservation District Watershed Specialist Jean Gomory will explain the tree planting’s positive effect on non-point source pollution along with what non-point source pollution is and where it comes from.

Attendants will also take part in a macroinvertebrate study (looking for bugs in the stream) where Gary Kell and Gary Finger of the Cornplanter Chapter of Trout Unlimited will discuss how macroinvertebrates indicate the health of a stream and will help with macroinvertebrate identification.

Presentations begin at 8:30 am and will wrap up by 12:00 p.m. at the latest and snacks will be provided.

This event is free but registration is required for planning purposes. RSVP by Friday, April 21 by calling 814-726-1441.
