Wendy MacQueen gets set to compete in the ax throwing event.

Column: Woodsmen’s Contest a Show in Stamina, Athletic Talent

August 15, 2021

PITTSFIELD, Pa. – There is so much going on at the Warren County Fair that it’s hard to pick just one or two things to turn your attention to.

From the food to the livestock, the entertainment and so much more, there is truly something for everyone.

On Thursday night, I decided to make my way to the Woodsmen’s Contest, not sure exactly what it was all about. What I saw exceeded my wildest expectations.

It was an incredible display in a multitude of events by some of the best athletes of the STIHL Timbersports Series, as well as local competitors like Wendy MacQueen (more on her to come on YDL).

The athleticism required to compete in logrolling, ax throwing and cross cutting, for example, is much, much harder than it looks. It takes endless hours of training, preparation and overall hard work.

Trust me, the competitors that reach the top are every bit the professional athletes that you follow more closely, like football or baseball players. And you can watch these guys and gals on television as well.

But on this night, they all entertained at the Warren County Fair. It was fun, fast-paced, and truly enjoyable.

And the indoor pavilion provided a nice relief from the storms outside on Thursday night as well.

My only regret is that this was my first experience watching the competition. I will definitely be back for more and have taken a keen interest in those competitions on the professional circuit as well, which from quick research I gathered can be found on CBS Sports Network.

Again, there is so much going on at the fair that it can be hard to choose what to do or who to see. But, as it winds down, I encourage you to do and see as much as you can.

Perhaps my biggest takeaway, and I know I’m stating the obvious here, but it was just so enjoyable to see a large crowd of people enjoying themselves. The past 18 months have been hard on all of us with the COVID-19 pandemic.

But this week, and particularly for me on Thursday night, fun was the overwhelming winner. And that’s a great sign as we move forward.
