Carl Leichtenberger

Carl Robert (Sonny) Leichtenberger Sr. 82, of Barnes passed away peacefully early Tuesday morning, February  9, 2021 after a brief stay at the Rouse Home in Youngsville due to a long struggle with Alzheimer’s.

He was born on February 6, 1939 in Brookston PA, the son and the youngest of 15 children of Augustine Paul Lichtenberger and Frances Blauser Lichtenberger.  Sonny was a 1957 graduate of the East Forest High School in Marienville.

He married the love of his life, the former Barbara Cole on November 1, 1961 and together they raised five children.  Sonny was a lifetime resident of Barnes area.  He retired from Sylvania as a millwright after 30 years.  He was an avid bowler, hunter and fisherman and was a little league coach for many years.  His true love was spending time with his children and grandchildren.  He thoroughly loved attending their sporting events and school functions where they could always count on him cheering them on.

Left behind to cherish Sonny’s memory are his wife Barbara at home, four sons, Carl Leichtenberger Jr. and his wife Sue of Pittsfield, Mark Leichtenberger and his wife Stephanie of Sheffield, Jeff Leichtenberger and his companion Kristi Kulka of Sheffield, Joe Leichtenberger and his wife Tracy of  Barnes, and one daughter Julie Dailey of Warren.  He is also survived by his grandchildren Laura, Jimmy, Kyle Leichtenberger and his wife Megan, Tyler, Cayla, Morgan, Tanner, and Emily Leichtenberger , Lennon Dailey,  Broc Horn and his wife Katie, and Elyssa Horn.

He is further survived by three great-grandchildren, Madilynn  and Toby Leichtenberger and Nora Horn.  Lastly, Sonny is survived by three sisters, Elaine Boylan of Lantz Corners, Marguerite Black of Youngsville, and Mary Moore of Falconer, NY.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Lucy Hearst, Irene Zock, Ruth Kosinski, and Lena Leichtenberger and brothers Roy, Paul (Buster), Al, Frank, Bill, John, as well as an infant brother.

There will be no public calling hours or services and burial will be private.  The family has entrusted the Borden Funeral Home of Sheffield with the final arrangements.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.
