Bradford Native South, Big 30 Committee Original Member, Longtime Track Official, Scoreboard Operator, Passes Away

Robert W. South, 76, of Harding Avenue, Bradford, passed away Monday, April 3, 2023, at the Penn Highlands Hospital, in St Marys.

Born June 9, 1946, in Bradford, he was the son of the late Harwell and Evelyn J. (Maben) South-Roberts.

On June 17, 1967, in High Point NC, he married Linda (Newton) South, who preceded him in death on November 2, 2021.

Bob was a 1964 graduate of Bradford Area High School. Following graduation, he enlisted in the US Army on July 9, 1964, and served until his honorable discharge on July 7, 1967.

Bob worked as a custodian for the Bradford Area School District for 27 years. In his retirement, he served as the crossing guard for both Fretz and School Street.

In addition to his love for his family, Bob was deeply devoted to serving his community. He was an original member of the Big 30 All-Star Charities Classic Committee serving as Secretary for 47 years before becoming President 3 years ago. He brought joy to many children and families by playing Santa Clause during the holidays throughout the community. Bob operated the scoreboard at many area fields and gymnasiums, including decades of Bradford Owl Football games. He was a long-standing PIAA Track and Field and Cross-Country Official working at many local and district meets. He also worked for the Athletic Department at Pitt Bradford.

Bob was a member of the Hilltop Baptist Church, the American Legion Post 108, and VFW Post 212.

Surviving are three sons, Robert (Amy) South, of St. Johnsbury, VT, Bradley (Gigi Dupont) South, of Bradford, and Brian (Jennifer) South, of Bradford, five grandchildren, Sierra (Danny) Ehlers, Hannah (Cheyenne) Chavis, Audrey South, Lillian South, and Lucas South, three great-grandchildren, Lacey, Scarlett, and Jeremiah, two sisters, Mary Roberts, of Grand Meadow, MN, and Reba Lynn Williams, of Bradford, one brother, Jack H. (Vicki) Roberts, of Las Vegas, NV, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife of 54 years, Linda, one brother, Gary South, and his mother’s brothers, the Mabens.

Friends and family will be received on Friday, April 7, 2023, from 3 to 5 PM and 7 to 9 PM in the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes Inc., 372 E. Main Street. Funeral Service will be held on Saturday at 10 AM at the Hilltop Baptist Church, with Rev Max Sims, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Willow Dale Cemetery where Military Honors will be accorded with the United States Army and the Honor Guard of the American Legion Post 108.
