Better Than Ever: Warren County Winterfest 2023 a Rousing Success

February 6, 2023

CLARENDON, Pa. – Warren County Winterfest was back and better than ever in 2023.

The weather cooperated on Saturday – for the most part (the ice fishing tournament had to be canceled, as did the sled dog races), and events like the Salvation Army Polar Bear Plunge, the kayak races, which were new in 2023, and much more went off with plenty of fun for all.

“The weekend was very successful,” said John Papalia of the Warren County Chamber of Business and Industry. “I’m extremely grateful to all the volunteer organizations and sponsors that made it possible for the event to go on.”

Papalia noted that over 1,000 people came out to enjoy the event, which went from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Many of the children in attendance simply enjoyed the opportunity to get out sled riding on the big hill at Chapman, while parents watched and went and enjoyed the hospitality tent, which featured food and vendors.

“The polar plunge and the sledding races all went off very successfully,” Papalia said.

The temperature was in the mid-to-high teens for most of the event with the sun shining, which also helped boost attendance in what was the second full year of the event post-COVID.

“This year was definitely a step forward,” Papalia said. “It was unfortunate that we didn’t get enough snow to do the sled dog races and the ice just wasn’t quite thick enough for the ice fishing tournament, but there were still lots of people fishing as the ice got thicker throughout the day. Depending on the weather, we’ll be able to get that in next year.”

And the staff at Chapman was also out in full force to help contribute to the success of the event.

“I’m extremely grateful to Chapman and all of the staff,” Papalia said. “They really do a tremendous job of getting the park prepared.”

The kayak races were something new in 2023 and even featured WCCBI President Jim Decker taking part, which drew plenty of smiles from the crowd.

“I think the kayak races are definitely something we can build upon,” Papalia said. “It was a good day weather-wise and I think we are definitely trending in the right direction.”
