ATV/OHM Trails on ANF to Open May 24, 2024

May 22, 2024

WARREN, Pa. — The Forest Service will open all-terrain vehicle and off-highway motorcycle trails at 8 a.m. on Friday, May 24 in the Allegheny National Forest.

The summer riding season runs through Sunday, Sept. 29, 2024.

Forest Service staff and contractors have been working hard on numerous trail projects in preparation for the coming season. Improvements occurred on the Timberline trail system where tread was reestablished on sections of the trail to address resource concerns and drainage issues. The projects were funded directly through motorized trail permit sales and were completed in partnership with American Conservation Experience young adult trail crews.

Annual permits are required to operate ATVs, UTVs, and OHMs on the 109-mile, motorized trail system. Information on how to secure a permit is available on the forest website.

Trail conditions can be challenging, and users are encouraged to consider their skill level when evaluating whether to use any trail. Forest Service staff will monitor motorized trail conditions and post information on the website and social media channels if trail status changes. Please check the trail conditions before riding.

To help protect the natural and cultural resources of the forest visitors are encouraged to practice outdoor ethics such as Leave No Trace principles and Tread Lightly. Trail users should always proceed cautiously, as many of the trails are open for multiple uses, and they may encounter vehicles, bicyclists, horseback riders, or hikers at any time. Riders are responsible for the safety of themselves and those around them.
