SCANDIA, Pa. – The sound of chainsaws at Red Oak Campground filled the air as artists displayed their skills at the 20th annual Scandia Chainsaw Carve on Friday and Saturday.

“We’ve attended now for quite a few years,” artist Ernie Quinn said. “It’s a great event. I think the Red Oak Campground is a wonderful host. They treat us well.”

Quinn and his wife Amber have been carving since 2007 and said the event provides a great opportunity to talk shop with other artists.

“All the carvers from different areas can all come here and work together, check out each other’s stuff, and talk trees and run and shop,” Quinn said.

Quinn, of Derry, PA, was creating a piece–a bear emerging from a tree–while he spoke to Your Daily Local. He said the couple would look at a stump or log and try to visualize what they see it becoming.

“We thought it was a gnome leaning against a mushroom, and then maybe a bear coming out of a stump,” Quinn said. “It was two choices and it became a bear.”

An event like the Chainsaw Carve, Quinn said, gives both patrons and carvers a chance to appreciate the artistry on display.

“It is art, it truly is,” Quinn said. “And if you just walk up and down you’ll see different levels of work. There are some masters of the art that have it perfected and there are some of us that still work at it.”
