‘A Social Event’: Warren Farmers Market Enjoys Successful First Day

June 19, 2021

WARREN, Pa. – The Warren Farmers Market officially opened for the season on Saturday morning at the Midtown Lot, with great fanfare and success.

Good weather coupled with plenty of vendors made for a welcome sight.

“It’s going very well,” Warren Farmers Market Board President Alan Scott said. “We’ve got some new vendors, a lot of people moving through, so it’s been a big success.”

Tom Frair of Frair Haus Greenhaus & Gardens called it ‘nuts, in a good way.’

“I started setting up around 6 a.m.,” Frair said.

As Scott alluded to, there were a number of different vendors, and just seeing people out and about after the COVID-19 pandemic made things difficult last year, was a sign of a return to normal.

“Just to see a good turnout of people and a variety of vendors,” Scott said about what makes the early season a success (the Farmers Market runs through the end of October.) “People like to see different things, and we have a lot of different things. Everything from soaps and perfumes to wildflowers, perennials, maple syrup, and of course, we have the band here.”

Added Frair about the band: “They come around 10 and play for a couple of hours at no charge. They’ve been doing that for several years.”

They certainly add to the pleasant, Saturday morning atmosphere.

“It’s a social event,” Scott said. “People come down, enjoy the music and walk around. We get a lot of the same people every week that come back and patronize us.”

And they have a lot to see, with more coming as the summer goes on.

“There’s a lot of new things,” Scott said. “I haven’t even seen all of them yet.”

Added Frair: “The main thing we like to promote is farm to consumer direct sales of locally grown produce. Our vendors, for the vast majority of years that I’ve been there, it’s been a hobby, it’s not a full-time business. We’re hoping folks will support small local businesses.
