2022 Walk for Apraxia Set for Sept. 18

September 14, 2022

ST. MARYS, Pa. – The 2022 North Central Pennsylvania Walk for Apraxia event will be held on Sept. 18 at St. Marys Area High School to benefit children with apraxia of speech.

Registration for the event begins at 9 a.m. with a ceremony beginning at 10 a.m. Registration is free.

“The Walk for Apraxia is a way for families to connect with other families in the apraxia community on a personal level and it helps to raise awareness in the community,” said Walk for Apraxia founder, Sue Freiburger. “I see parents relax when they realize that everyone there understands what apraxia is and I am so happy to see them connecting with professionals and families from their community. I always take a moment to step back and recall that little voice from the back seat of my car, a voice that I was told I might never hear, and think ‘we did it!’ With the help of volunteers around the country, we have built a community through the Walk for Apraxia.”

The funds raised through the 2022 North Cantal Pennsylvania Walk for Apraxia benefit Apraxia Kids, the leading nonprofit that works to strengthen the support systems in the lives of children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). This organization educates both families and speech-language professionals so that children with CAS can reach their highest communication potential through accurate diagnosis and appropriate, timely treatment.

Raising awareness is one of the most tangible ways that communities at large can help children with apraxia thrive. Collective increased awareness means that children will be diagnosed faster, resulting in better, earlier intervention.
